Dr. John Walshe is a leading authority on mineral system science, with research that has shaped how the mining industry conceptualizes and maps the systems behind Earth’s giant mineral deposits. As an advisor to Terra AI, John helps the company build deeper relationships with researchers, institutions, and industry partners across the mining sector.
John is Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO Mineral Resources, based at the Australian Resources Research Centre in Perth, Western Australia, where he leads the mineral systems mapping team within CSIRO’s Discovery Program. His research applies breakthrough concepts and technologies to produce 4D, scale-integrated maps of mineral systems, with a focus on the Archean gold systems of Western Australia — work sustained for more than 15 years in partnership with industry and government that an independent economic analysis credited with tens of millions of dollars in value to the sector. Since joining CSIRO in 1995, he has contributed to major Australian research consortia including the Australian Geodynamics CRC and the Predictive Mineral Discovery CRC, and has led projects applying new conceptual models to brownfields exploration. Before CSIRO, he spent 14 years as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Economic Geology at the Australian National University. He is also convenor of the Solomon Meeting, a forum advancing mineral system science held in honor of geologist Mike Solomon.
John holds a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from the University of Tasmania.
